The Ghana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) has marked another significant milestone in its mission to expand the reach of rugby across the country after securing the commitment of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) to introduce and develop the sport within the Service.
The breakthrough follows a productive engagement between the president of the Ghana Rugby Football Union Ms. Insuah Rafatu and the leadership of the Ghana Immigration Service’s Sports Unit, where discussions centred on integrating rugby into the Service’s sporting activities.
The meeting brought together the Head of Sports at the Ghana Immigration Service, Superintendent Anita Wiredu-Minta, and her Second-in-Command, Deputy Superintendent of Immigration (DSI) Andrew Asamoah Asante. The discussions explored the immense benefits rugby can offer to the Service, both as a competitive sport and as a tool for personal and professional development.
In a strong show of commitment, the Ghana Immigration Service expressed its readiness to embrace rugby, with plans already underway to introduce the game to both officers and civilians within the Service.
The long-term objective is to establish the Ghana Immigration Rugby Team, which is expected to become one of the newest additions to Ghana’s growing rugby community.
The initiative is expected to strengthen physical fitness, teamwork, discipline, leadership, resilience and camaraderie among personnel qualities that align perfectly with the core values of both rugby and the security services.
For Ghana Rugby, the partnership represents another important chapter in its strategic efforts to broaden participation, strengthen institutional support, and create sustainable pathways for talent identification and development across the country.
By extending the game into one of Ghana’s key security institutions, the Rugby Football Union continues to demonstrate its commitment to making rugby more accessible while fostering a culture of excellence, inclusion and national development through sport.
The planned formation of the Ghana Immigration Rugby Team is expected to provide fresh opportunities for athletes, inspire greater interest in the sport, and further deepen rugby’s footprint in Ghana.
As Ghana Rugby continues to build partnerships with institutions across the nation, the collaboration with the Ghana Immigration Service stands as another bold statement that the future of rugby in Ghana is growing stronger one partnership, one team and one community at a time.
