Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has clarified why the Government of Ghana spent GH¢58 million on the Black Stars’ participation at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, revealing that a much larger budget had initially been set aside based on the team’s expected progress in the tournament.
According to the Finance Minister, the government had allocated GH¢150 million for the Black Stars’ entire World Cup campaign, with the assumption that Ghana would advance all the way to the final.
“I allocated GH¢150 million for the entire campaign, assuming the team would reach the finals,” Dr. Ato Forson explained.
However, Ghana’s campaign ended earlier than anticipated, resulting in the government spending only GH¢58 million of the total amount budgeted.
The Finance Minister’s comments come amid public discussions over the cost of the Black Stars’ participation at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
His explanation suggests that the initial allocation was based on projected expenses, including accommodation, logistics, bonuses, and other operational costs that would have increased had the team progressed deeper into the competition.
The Black Stars reached the Round of 32 at the tournament before being eliminated, bringing their World Cup journey to an end well before the final stage. As a result, a significant portion of the allocated funds remained unspent.
Dr. Ato Forson’s clarification aims to provide transparency on the government’s financial commitment to Ghana’s World Cup campaign and address concerns surrounding the reported expenditure.
