Ghana Government To Financially Cushion Asante Kotoko’s CAF Champions League Quest

President of West African nation Ghana, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo has intimated his government will support Asante Kotoko (and other clubs participating) in CAF interclub competitions in order to reclaim the eminence of the country in relation to continental football.

The nation has witnessed a sharp decline in terms of performance at the continental level with clubs failing to reach the group stages talk more of reaching the latter stages of the competitions with Asante Kotoko been the last club from Ghana that reached the group stages of any of the continent’s flagship interclub competitions.

His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo, a staunch fan of the Porcupine Warriors contends when the Kumasi-based heavyweights succeeds it facilitates and accelerates the success rate of the entire sport in the country.

“It is difficult for Ghana football to succeed unless Kotoko succeeds. That’s how it has been in the past and that’s how it should be in the future” the president said as quoted by Kumasi-based media outlet Oyerepa FM.

“Kotoko a very special, cherished and enviable role in Ghanaian Sports development,” he eulogized.

The current government, are looking at diverse ways of enhancing the development of the nation via sports through the building of sports facilities and intend to cushion football clubs which will be featuring in continental football to raise the flag of the nation high.

“Clearly it’s possible the Government should be able to assist the club, these will be temporary measures over a period of time, a year or two. Ultimately the club should be self sufficient, generating money for keeping the club going,”

He continued: “We will put our heads together to see what can be done to assist,through the minister of sports,”

“I think it’s in the interest of Ghana to have a strong participation to fly the flag of Ghana.”

Ghana will be represented by Asante Kotoko and AshantiGold SC in the upcoming CAF Champions League and Confederations Cup respectively.
